Havre de Grace Frost Bite Racing
Yes, folks, you are reading that right – – sailboat racing continues into the winter, weather allowing. The racing is in one-design Laser boats, which are sailed single-handed (but always with a dry suit on, just in case it flips!).
The Frost Bite series started up the first Sunday after Thanksgiving, and has continued over six additional Sundays since then. The fleet gathers to launch at Tidewater Marina around 1 PM on Sundays, and after a check on conditions, venture out for a series of races. They look for a minimum of four participating boats, and of course liquid water, not solid on the Bay. A “20/20” rule applies, so no racing if the air temperature is below 20 degrees F, or the wind above 20 knots. (Burrr!)
The fleet is accompanied by Jim A. in his Whaler power boat, which is used as both the RC signal boat and a recovery boat, if needed. Participants so far include Pat P., Tom C., Jeff S., Mohamed H., Mark H., Carl R. and Tony I. Many of these happy sailors are in the picture below.
Please stop on by the clubhouse on Sunday afternoons to cheer on these intrepid sailors. And if your sanity is questionable, consider joining them out on the water!
