More than 2 dozen sailors took the afternoon of March 23rd off to attend a locally run informal seminar. Using mostly a question and discussion approach, sailors discussed typical racing issues and how best to handle them. Ranging from overlaps at a mark, who really has rights at the start, the proper way to protest another boat, and tips on being race committee, the group learned from one another’s expertise on the race course. Using newly-built boat models, sailors were better able to illustrate their points. And thanks to Tidewater Marina, the group spent the afternoon in the comfortable new Regatta Room which easily held a group of this size. The goal is to run better races, foul other boats less often, and stay true to the ideals of good sportsmanship. Now, let’s see if we can apply everything we learned in the classroom to the Susquehanna River on Thursday nights!
Just after the seminar, the bonfire was lighted, the music started, more sailors and families arrived, and the Havre de Grace Yacht Club held its fourth annual sock burning ceremony. Daylight savings time meant a late sunset, but the wind chill surely made the fire feel good. Thanks to exceedingly ambitious cooks, the group feasted on everything from mac-and-cheese to chili, pasta, and pulled pork. We all left with full stomachs, but it was hard for some sailors to commit to sockless feet, given the prediction of snows for the last week of March.
